I think you made the right choice!
On my first international flight at 19 years old, I chatted with a kind, elderly airline employee before the flight and he was able to bump me up to first class for that and several more trips to the UK. It was a sad day when he retired because I’d never pay for first class (although, in your situation, I definitely would have)!
